“Neurons that fire together wire together”
Does that mean anything to you? It might not. SuperCamp.com explains, “It can be beneficial to have neurons wired together. The neural network helps us learn, store, and recall information in an effective way. For example, when you’re getting to know an acquaintance, the neural network helps you to remember the person’s name through many subtle triggers.”
Joe Dispenza, a Doctor of Chiropractic uses the quotation, “Neurons that fire together wire together” from David Hebb and others in his book, Evolve Your Brain.
This is the book that goes along with the second section of our 30-day course.
This book is all about, as the title implies, evolving your brain. What does that mean? Many things, but it can mean whatever you want. I wrote briefly in the introduction about letting my subconscious go to work for me.
If you understand that, as Dr. Dispenza states, unconscious thoughts and behaviors dictate what we believe and how we behave. Beyond that, our body sends constant messages to your mind which sends messages back to your body.
Let’s run through a brief hypothetical situation. You are driving home after a day of working. You are at a red light, you catch yourself adjusting your rear view mirror (as many do) because you are slouching a little more than you were this morning. That body language sends what message to your brain? That you are tired.
Once your brain receives the message that your body is tired, what does it think that your body needs? Energy. But how do we get energy? Food and sleep. There are two ways. In that moment, you are driving, it is unlikely that you are eating at the same time, I wouldn’t recommend it. So if there is not food to refuel you, then sleep must do the trick. Your mind sends a message back to your body, it says, “Body, we’re tired, let’s shut down and refuel.”
What if you made the conscious decisions to first of all, sit up straight, and second of all, repeat over and over (with intent) that you are energized? Would your mind still receive the message that you are tired? Probably not. Would it still send a message to your body that it thinks you are tired? Probably not.
That is one key point, the messages that we send our mind when we say “I feel like I’m getting sick” or “I feel tired” or “I’m so upset” or “I can’t do this” are NOT productive, our mind digests those commands and sends them right back to the body. We must take control of our bodies and minds, together. You cannot do one without the other, we must intentionally control both to ensure we can attain that which we desire.
Next in the audiobook, the other thing that resonated with me was the idea that the greater the activity in the frontal lobe, the lower the level of cortisol (the stress hormone).
Beyond that, the largely unknown statistic 90% of people receiving medical care are receiving that care because of a stress-related disorder, that means 90% of those receiving medical care can prevent it. That isn’t you is it?
Finally, the power of visualization.
You fire the SAME set of nerve cells in your brain by VISUALIZING an act and by CARRYING OUT an act. That is incredible.
That means that if you are sitting there in a Taxi or Uber or Lyft and you are trying to get good at playing the piano, you can intensely visualize yourself playing it and playing it well and you will fire the same set of nerve cells. Of course this can never replace the actual act of playing the piano, but it can definitely accelerate the process.
This book was quite good and had a lot of great key points. I have been going to a chiropractor for years and years so I had a fairly well-developed knowledge base about the mind and body connection before completing the book, but this definitely propelled me further in the right direction because I now understand just how much I can do to truly create my future.
